Mules keep rolling, advance to Semifinals of NESCAC's with 12-6 victory over Williams
Colby vs Williams College
April 28, 2002
Waterville, Maine
Waterville, Maine- The Colby College White Mules (10-4, 7-3 NESCAC) rode a second and third period surge to victory at Seaverns Field over the Williams College Ephs (6-8, 4-6 NESCAC) 12-6. The first round NESCAC playoff game was an exciting, physical game that was played under heavy snowfall and precipitation the entire game. The Mules came out of the gates with a great deal of intensity, but their offense was unable to put up any points in the opening period. Williams took advantage of the Colby lack of production, taking control of the game with three goals in the first period, two coming from Scott Goldberg '02 and the other from Geoff McNally '05. Williams began to pick up penalties at the end of the first period, and with the man advantage the Colby offense began to look more efficient. They would get things going in the second period, with Bill Spencer '02 scoring first for Colby. Then Josh Cleaver '04 and Barron Butler '03 both made strong moves to the net for scores. An Eric Seidel '05 goal at 4:40 of the second gave Colby a 4-3 lead. Williams would score first in the third period, as Matt Barhight '05 made a slicing move for an unassisted goal. Colby would once again take control, scoring four unanswered goals due to crisp ball movement and feeds. Scoring for Colby was Butler twice, Cleaver, and Blake Grosch '02. Williams would score the final goal of the period with 1:45 remaining when Scott Wilbur '04 took a pass from Peter Thomson '03. The Mules would put the game away in a 4:28 span when they scored three goals to put them up six. Scoring for Colby was Chris Larson '02 as he scored a spectacular goal when he powered through the Ephs defenders and got off a shot falling down. Cleaver picked up his third goal of the game, and Bill Spencer shot in his second goal on a bouncer off the ground. John Shea '02 was solid all day in the net for Colby, saving 5 shots while Baemen Vertovez '04 and Matt Rade '04 split the goaltending duties for Williams.
