 2003 Season Recap
After making the NESCAC championship game in 2002, the Colby men's lacrosse team had difficulties consistently scoring goals and had injury problems in going 4-8 in 2003.
The Mules did have some key graduation losses from the 2002 team, including some top goal scorers. Those losses hurt Colby in conference games as the Mules scored just 69 goals in nine games.
Barron Butler '03, a preseason All-America selection and a NESCAC second team pick in 2002, missed three games due to injury. The senior still finished first in the conference in assists per game (2.33) and third in points per game (3.56). Butler had 11 goals and 21 assists for 32 points.
Joshua Cleaver '04 was second on the team in scoring with 27 goals and three assists for 30 points. He was seventh in the NESCAC in goals per game (2.25) and 16th in points per game.
Senior long-stick midfielder Ben Winston '03 earned NESCAC and NEILA (New England Region) first team honors for his play. Winston had seven goals, one assist, and finished with 45 ground balls.
Besides Winston, Colby also got defensive support from Nick Owens '04 and goalie Matthew LaPaglia '04. Owens led the team in ground balls with 51, while LaPaglia started in the nets for the first time and had 172 saves in 13 games. LaPaglia was first in the conference in save percentage at .635.
Winston and Owens each made the NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team for the second straight year.
