Colby Men's Lacrosse 2003-2004 Season Preview
The Mules open the season at second-ranked Middlebury College at 1 p.m. Saturday before playing two games in Florida during the squad's spring trip from March 20-26.
Colby and head coach Rob Quinn suffered a tragic loss when first-year player Ian Holt died in a car accident over Christmas break. The Mules are leaving Holt's name on the roster and the team has decided to let the player who works hardest in practice during the week wear Holt's No. 22 jersey in the game that weekend.
Senior attacker Joshua Cleaver led the Mules in goals (27) and was second in points last year with 30. Cleaver will get help on the attack line from Mike Haimes and face-off man Ryan Glennon. Haimes missed most of last year with injury problems, while Glennon was third in scoring with 10 goals and seven assists for 17 points.
Eric Seidel (6 goals, 6 assists), Matt Roland (8 goals, 7 assists) and Sean Murphy make up the midfield. Meanwhile, senior Nick Owens will lead the defensive corps from the long-stick midfield position. Tom Deutsch, Jonathan Bodansky and first-year player Kyle Haskett are the other defenders.
Matt LaPaglia returns in goal after starting 11 games and making 171 saves last year.
 Program Overview
Colbys lacrosse program has a tradition of success dating back to 1964. During the 2002 campaign the program reached new heights with a first-ever NESCAC Championship game appearance (Colby lost to Middlebury 14-9) and a ranking of 17th in the final national poll. The Mules experienced much success in the 90s with a 95-43 record. During that span Colby gained seven ECAC berths and one NESCAC Championship. Regionally, Colby has been consistently ranked in the top 10 of the New England Coaches poll and is one of the areas more dominant teams. The Mules also have been ranked nationally by the STX/USILA eight out of the last 12 years.
