 Game Recap:

NO. 18 COLBY DOWNS NO. 19 BATES, 13-11, IN OVERTIME NESCAC CLASH
Colby vs Bates College
April 3, 2002
Lewiston, Maine

In a battle of two nationally ranked New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) teams today, the No. 18 Colby College White Mules survived a furious comeback by the No. 19 Bates College Bobcats to take a 13-11 overtime women's lacrosse victory on a rain-soaked Campus Avenue Field today.

Bates (4-2, 1-2 NESCAC), playing in its second-straight overtime contest, trailed by three, 10-7, midway through the second half. Bobcat sophomore midfielders Catherine Crosby (Lincoln, Mass.) and Becky Castle (Stonington, Conn.) each scored two unassisted goals as the Bobcats closed regulation on a 4-1 run. Crosby picked up a ground ball and went coast-to-coast to tie the game, 10-10, with just over 12 minutes left on the clock. The White Mules scored what looked to be the game-winner on junior attack Ashley Martin's (Owings Mills, Md.) only goal of the game with 1:46 left on the clock, but Castle knotted the game at 11-11 with just 40 ticks left in regulation.

Colby (2-3, 1-3 NESCAC) lost the opening draw of the overtime but held the Bobcats in check. On their next possession, junior midfielder Lauren Gremelspacher (Granby, Conn.) found a seam and scored the eventual game winner 1:24 into the overtime period. Colby senior captain Marcia Ingraham (Georgetown, Mass.) added an insurance goal just 35 seconds after the teams switched sides, helping the White Mules secure the 13-11 win.

Ingraham led all scorers with four goals, while junior Ally King (W. Hartford, Conn.) had four assists. Both players recorded a game-high five points. Crosby led Bates with three goals and an assist, while Castle and sophomore Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) also recorded hat tricks. Junior Anna Schierberl-Scherr (Portsmouth, N.H.) made 13 saves in the winning effort for Colby, while Bates senior Jen Strahle (Ridgewood, N.J.) had nine stops as the Bobcats saw their four-game win streak come to a halt.
