COLBY TAKES KEY NESCAC CONTEST AT TUFTS, 12-9
Colby vs Tufts Jumbos
April 13, 2002
Medford, Mass.
MEDFORD -- Visiting Colby College scored five unanswered goals in the
middle of the second half to break a 7-7 tie and take control for an
eventual 12-9 victory at Tufts in NESCAC women's lacrosse action on
Saturday afternoon.
The win was the fourth in a row for Colby, which improved to 5-3 and 3-3
in NESCAC. Tufts lost its third straight and fell below .500 to 4-5
overall while remaining winless (0-5) in NESCAC. The game was a battle
between two teams vying for one of the seven spots into the NESCAC
playoff tournament.
The White Mules led 7-4 at the half, but host Tufts got goals from
sophomores Erin Hyde (Pownal, ME), Lauren Peach (Maplewood, NJ) and
Kristin Saldarelli (Yorktown Heights, NY) in the first 10 minutes of the
second half to tie the score at 7-7. Colby soon began its five-goal run,
started by junior Ally King (West Hartford, CT) at 18:46. King assisted
on freshman Ali Grenert's (Sewickley, PA) game-winning goal at 16:32,
then added her second goal of the stretch at 13:39. The Jumbos made a
late run with two goals just 11 seconds apart, but it wasn't enough.
King was one of four Colby players with two goals, and added two assists
for a four-point day. Junior Anna Schierberl Scherr (Portsmouth, NH)
made 13 saves. Hyde scored a career-high four goals to lead Tufts, while
junior Ari Kristan (South Windsor, CT) made eight saves.
