 2003 Season Recap
Playing in the toughest conference in the country for women's lacrosse is the only factor that kept the Colby women's lacrosse team out of the NCAA Tournament in 2003.
The Mules finished the season ranked 11th in the country and had a 13-4 overall record, with their only losses coming to three NESCAC teams who received bids to the NCAA tourney and two that played in the national title game.
Colby had its season end in the NESCAC semifinals with a loss to Middlebury. The Mules had run off 10 straight victories before that setback, including a NESCAC playoff win over Bowdoin. The Mules once again won the CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) Championship with regular season wins against their in-state rivals.
Co-captain Ally King '03 became a two-time All-American after earning second-team honors from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). King finished as Colby's all-time leading scorer with 109 goals and 113 assists for 222 career points. The 113 assists is also a team record. King is the only Colby women's lacrosse player with more than 100 goals and 100 assists in a career. King finished seventh nationally and was second in the conference in assists per game (2.59) and was fifth in points per game (4.18) with 27 goals and 44 assists for 71 points. The 44 assists broke her single-season record set back in 2001.
Senior co-captain Katie Trainor '03 and King both earned second team All-America honors from Warrior/Inside Lacrosse. Trainor was the lone Mule on the NESCAC first team and also earned team MVP honors for her outstanding defensive play. She finished seventh in the country and led the Mules in caused turnovers (56, 3.29 per game). Trainor also had 11 goals, two assists and was tied for second in ground balls with 47.
Amanda Epstein '03 and Kate Wheeler '04 both earned IWLCA/USL second team New England Regional honors. Epstein also received NESCAC second team honors and was a NESCAC Spring All-Academic selection. Both Epstein and Wheeler were midfield standouts and major workhorses on the team playing at both ends of the field.
Attacker Cara Dionisi '04 also had a big season, but missed out on league honors because of the overall talent in the conference. She finished second on the team in scoring with a team-best 35 goals and added 17 assists for 52 points.
Emma Miller '05 (18 goals, 6 assists), Elizabeth Ghilardi '06 (17 goals, 6 assists) and Lauren Gremelspacher '03 (17 goals, 5 assists) were other top scorers for head coach Heidi Godomsky.
Senior goaltender Anna Schierberl Scherr was second in the NESCAC in save percentage (.575) and third in goals against average (8.56). Besides Trainor, Schierberl Scherr received defensive support from Kim Jones '05 (team-best 59 ground balls, 34 caused turnovers), Nora Beltz '05 (47 ground balls), Becca Avrutin '04 (34 ground balls) and Meredith Pfaff '03 (26 ground balls).
