The Colby ski team, which received varsity status in 1986, won five Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association (EISA) Division II titles between 1987 and 1992. The program moved into EISA Division I in 1993 and finished 15th at the NCAA championships that year. In 1994 Colby was host to the NCAA championships at Sugarloaf/USA near Carrabasset Valley, Maine.
On-snow training is conducted on Colby's 10-kilometer groomed trail system and at the Nordic Touring Center at Sugarloaf/USA, which has had the most consistent snow in the region over the past several years. The Harold Alfond Athletic Center boasts a large, state-of-the-art fitness center featuring several treadmills, which are used for aerobic-threshold testing. The winter season begins in December with early races and, after the holiday break, a week-long training camp is held at Mt. Ste. Anne, Quebec. During January and February the entire team competes in the carnivals and the development team competes in the New England Junior Olympic Qualifying races. The season concludes in March with the NCAA and Junior National Championships.
Colby's training program consists of 400-550 hours yearly, but is individualized to meet each skier's needs. A lot of time is spent on technique training and ski specific workouts such as ski walking and hill bounding. Skiers do quality intensity workouts, but an emphasis is also placed on rest and recovery. Training hours are greatest in the summer and fall with more racing and speed training in the winter. The area surrounding Waterville provides excellent areas for fall training, with a tremendous number of trails leaving right from the college campus. A short drive to western Maine provides mountain scenery with opportunities for hiking, snowshoeing and backcountry skiing.
