Colby Men's Soccer Team Honored

2001 Season Recap

The 2001 White Mules men's soccer team played solid defense but suffered the consequences of an injury-plagued fall to finish the season at 5-8-1. Season highlights included a 1-0 victory against the powerful NAIA squad of UMaine-Farmington, a well-played 3-1 win against Connecticut College, and a spirited 0-0 draw versus Bates in Colby's Family Homecoming weekend finale.

Junior midfielder Zach Shull (Framingham, Mass.) and senior midfielder Jon Ryder (Willington, Conn.) were named to the 2001 Fall NESCAC All-Academic team. The White Mules were also the only men's soccer squad in NESCAC to receive the NSCAA's Team Academic Award for 2001.

At the team's concluding banquet several individuals were recognized for their contributions during the season and over their careers. Senior tri-captains David Friedman (Avon, Conn.), David Manning (St. John's, Newf.), and Sean Skulley (Wakefield, Mass.) were awarded the traditional Colby blankets for their team leadership. Friedman also received the prestigious Sam Koch Award by vote of his teammates for his "spirit and dedication to Colby men's soccer" over the years. Junior sweeper Mike Jarcho (Hamilton, N.Y.) was voted the winner of the Mike Loebs "Most Valuable Player" Award for his consistent performance in 2001. Jarcho also was elected captain for the 2002 season, and will be assisted by Zach Shull '03 and Jamie Yurek '03 (Boulder, Colo.).
