Colby men's soccer opens season with win

Senior forward Jamie Yurek (Boulder, Colo.) had a goal and two assists to help the Colby College men's soccer team open the season with a 7-0 victory at Thomas College on Sunday.
The Mules (1-0), who led 4-0 at halftime, were awarded the Elm City bowl trophy for winning the game between the two Waterville colleges.
Zach Shull (Framingham, Mass.), Chris French (Winchester/Winchester, Mass.), Trevor McWilliams (Millbrook, N.Y.) and Mike Nguyen (Warsaw, Poland) each had one goal and one assist for Colby. Brian Kasarjian (Plymouth, Mass.) and Taylor Bemis (Concord, Mass.) also had goals. Jamie Lue (Kingston, Jamaica), Ryan Boccuzzi (Storrs, Conn.) and Brian Venti (Hanover, N.H.) all had one assist.
Yurek scored 14 minutes, 58 seconds into the game for Colby's first goal off assists from Shull and Boccuzzi. Yurek's shot from about 12 yards hit the inside of the right post and went into the net.
Nguyen, who had just entered the game three minutes earlier, scored his first collegiate goal at 26:26 when he spun and flicked in a pass from McWilliams. With about 13 minutes to halftime, Kasarjian also scored his first collegiate goal from a tough angle from the right side off a pass from Venti.
Shull closed out the scoring in the first half with 8:06 to play from a Yurek pass. Bemis, McWilliams and French scored the three goals in the second half.
Colby sophomore goalkeeper Brian Davidson (Needham, Mass.) made two saves.
The Mules open New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play on Saturday, September 14, at 2 p.m. at Bates College.
