COLBY SUMMER SOCCER CAMP INFORMATION 2004 Season RecapColby finished with a 5-7-2 record, went 4-0-1 in non-conference play and stand 18-1-1 outside the NESCAC in the last four years.
Senior goalkeeper Brian Davidson and junior defender Russell Gullette each made second team all-conference. The defense allowed just 17 goals in 14 games and did not give up more than two goals all season in regulation play. For the fourth straight year, the team earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Team Academic Award with an overall grade point average of 3.19. Davidson earned the Mike Loebs MVP Award for his play in goal. Trevor McWilliams won the Sam Koch Award for spirit and dedication to the program. Besides the team academic award, players Ryan Boccuzzi, Aaron Poplack and Monty Hankin made the NESCAC Fall All Academic Team. Gullette and midfielder Bobby Abendroth have been named co-captains for the 2005 team. 2004 Season PreviewMidfielder Ryan Boccuzzi '05 (Storrs, Conn.) will captain the 2004 team for the second straight year. In 2003-04 he was the leading scorer for the Mules and was among the leaders in NESCAC in scoring. Colby lost just one senior to graduation and the 13 players who recorded points in 2003 all will return. Team depth should come with players moving up from the junior varsity program and the addition of new first-year players. The Mules should be tough defensively with three starters on defense returning and two experienced goalkeepers. Colby will try to earn the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for a fourth straight year. Program OverviewColby competes in the 11-member New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), comprised of select NCAA Division III colleges that emphasize academic and athletic excellence. The men's varsity soccer program was undefeated in its 1959 inaugural season and has demonstrated success and sportsmanship ever since. The 1978 team finished 11-2-1 and won the ECAC New England Division II/III Championship. In 1990 the team finished with a 12-0-2 record and a number one ranking in New England Division III. After a semifinal ECAC tournament appearance in 1992, Colby finished 16-1-1, and in 1993 the Mules captured the ECAC New England Division III title. The squad also received the Fair Play Award for Sportsmanship from the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League, its third sportsmanship honor in four years. In 1994 the Mules compiled a 10-2-2 regular season record and reached the semifinals of the ECAC tournament. The 1998 team finished at 8-5-1 and advanced to the ECAC quarterfinals. The past few years Colby teams have earned academic honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and from the NESCAC. A well-established junior varsity program has aided in the program's success.
