2006 Season Preview

Co-captain Dan Kiernan ’07 proved he could be an offensive threat during his sophomore season by leading Colby in scoring. He switched to defense for his junior season and was named to the All-New England and NESCAC second teams.

Co-captain Josh Kahane ’07 returns in goal after being among the NESCAC leaders in saves per game (5.00). Colby will have more experience in back this year with Matthew Shatkin ’09 and Jamie Waters ’08 returning.

Will Kinder ’08 and Mike Butler ’08 each started in the midfield last year.

Forward Chris MacFadyen ’07 led the 2005 team in scoring with five goals and two assists for 12 points. Todd Boertzel ’09 joined the team midway through the season and added one goal and three assists. Logan King ’09 adds depth to the forward line.

The Mules hope to be tough again at home in 2006. Colby went 4-3 on its home turf, but all three setbacks were one-goal losses.

Colby will try to earn the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for a sixth straight year. The Mules are the only men’s soccer team in NESCAC to have earned the award five straight years.

2005 Season Recap

Colby had one of its best seasons in the last few years with a 7-7 record that could have been better with some luck. The Mules lost two games in overtime and had four of the seven losses by one goal.

Junior Daniel Kiernan earned NESCAC second team honors as a defender. Kiernan led the Mules last year in scoring, but moved to defense after graduation losses took their toll in back.

Senior captain Bobby Abendroth and Chris MacFadyen led Colby in scoring with five goals and two assists apiece. Monty Hankin had four goals and two assists in just nine games after coming back from an injury.

Program Overview

Colby competes in the 11-member New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), comprised of select NCAA Division III colleges that emphasize academic and athletic excellence.

The men's varsity soccer program was undefeated in its 1959 inaugural season and has demonstrated success and sportsmanship ever since. The 1978 team finished 11-2-1 and won the ECAC New England Division II/III Championship. In 1990 the team finished with a 12-0-2 record and a number one ranking in New England Division III. After a semifinal ECAC tournament appearance in 1992, Colby finished 16-1-1, and in 1993 the Mules captured the ECAC New England Division III title.

The squad also received the Fair Play Award for Sportsmanship from the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League, its third sportsmanship honor in four years. In 1994 the Mules compiled a 10-2-2 regular season record and reached the semifinals of the ECAC tournament. The 1998 team finished at 8-5-1 and advanced to the ECAC quarterfinals.

The past few years Colby teams have earned academic honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and from the NESCAC. A well-established junior varsity program has aided in the program's success.
