White Mules Outlast Cougars

11/1/98

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Colby College Men's Soccer team hit the road on Sunday for a make-up game against Clark University and escaped with a 2-1 victory. After the White Mules took a 2-0 lead into halftime, sophomore goalie Justin Amirault (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) held off the Cougars, making 10 saves to earn the win.

Colby senior Matt Sawatzky (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) picked a fine time to score the first goal of his collegiate career, as he beat Clark goalie David Pheil to give the White Mules a 1-0 advantage just over 22 minutes into the game. Senior Mark Melander (Bowdoinham, Me./Mt. Ararat) gave Colby some breathing room when he scored his team-leading eighth goal of the year at the 31-minute mark.

The Cougars pulled to within one when Jacob Simmons scored six minutes into the second half, but Amirault made the lead stand, as he helped Colby improve its record to 8-4-1 on the season.

The White Mules will conclude their regular season when they host Bowdoin this Tuesday. The contest will not only have major post-season implications, but will also determine the 1998 Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) Championship.
