Twenty-five Years of Softball at Colby
The 2001 season brought to an end the first 25 years of softball at Colby. During this period of time many outstanding women took the field to represent their alma mater in what is one of the great traditions of collegiate life athletic competition against other colleges and universities. For the past 25 years the Colby White Mules softball players have continually distinguished themselves both on and off the field. They have brought great credit to Colby. As we start the next quarter century we need to look back on the first 25 years with tremendous pride and the determination that we can continue to distinguish ourselves. Through hard work we will meet the challenge.
2001 Softball
The 2001 Colby White Mules came home from Florida to begin their northern season on a brand new softball field. While field construction took most of last summer, it was well worth the wait. The new field has everything you would want including underground sprinkler system and a permanent outfield fence with warning track. What sets this field apart from others, however, is its unique appearance. To have the field properly graded it was necessary to significantly lower the elevation of the outfield. Fans can now sit outside the outfield fence and look over the top of the fence to watch the game. What a great way to watch your Colby White Mules softball team in action.
The Colby White Mules experienced some exciting softball throughout the season. In the very first game freshman pitcher Amy Lisavich '04 tossed a one hitter against powerful Huntingdon College of Alabama. Amy continued to pitch and bat well throughout the season. In another Ft. Myers' game, the White Mules beat Lawrence University of Appleton, Wis., for the first time in an exciting nail-biter, 1-0. Sophomore pitcher Stacy Thurston '03 gave up just one hit.
Our northern games were highlighted by double-header wins over Trinity, 9-1 and 3-1. Lisavich and Stephanie Greenleaf '01 each pitched three hitters. The team compiled 20 hits and only made one miscue in garnering these victories. In our next to last home game of the season the White Mules spotted Thomas College four runs in the first inning, but held them scoreless for the next 12, and went on to win by scoring the go ahead run in the bottom of the 13th. The White Mules ended the season with a 10-15 record. Leading the team in hitting this year were first-year players Kate Trasher and Amy Lisavich, and third-year players Kim Chadwick and Marcy Wagner.
While the team will miss the leadership of seniors Stephanie Greenleaf and Liz Oberlin, some outstanding players will return next year, including several of the team's leading hitters. Couple these players with the crop of promising new ones, and the 2002 Colby White Mules softball team will be up to the challenge. The 2002 team will be guided by three of next year's returning seniors, Kim Chadwick, Kate Dalton and Marcy Wagner.
