Colby Softball Falls to Bowdoin 5-4, Is Eliminated from NESCAC's
Colby vs Bowdoin Polar Bears
April 29, 2002
Brunswick, Maine
BRUNSWICK, Maine - A wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Bowdoin's
Britney Carr, capping off a two-run rally to give the Polar Bears a 5-4 win over Colby in their NESCAC regular season finale on Monday afternoon. With the victory, Bowdoin secured the final spot in the NESCAC Tournament this upcoming weekend. The Polar Bears are 24-8-1 on the season, while the White Mules fall to 12-12-2.
In a driving rainstorm in Brunswick, the two teams battled the elements as much as
eachother as the gametime temperature hovered around the freezing mark. The White Mules struck first, scoring three unearned runs in the fourth inning as Polar Bear pitcher Jessie Poulin struggled to control her pitches with the slick softball. Marcy Wagner, Kate Trasher and Carrie Morin all scored in the inning, giving Colby a strong 3-0 advantage. The lead looked secure as White Mule pitcher Annette Caswell kept the Polar Bears off balance, allowing only one run through five innings, while Colby added another run in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. The Polar Bears broke through in the sixth, however, as Michelle Jackson and Jessie Mayol both plated to cut the Colby lead to 4-3.
After a strong top of the seventh for Poulin, Rizza led off the bottom of the frame with a
rocket to right center. A bunt base-hit by Carr gave Bowdoin runners on first and second with no one out. After two Polar Bears made outs, Jordan Alper took a walk to load the bases. Rachel Gordon worked relief pitcher Trasher deep into the count before hitting a soft grounder to short. Gordon beat the throw by a step, scoring Rizza to tie the contest. Kristi Royer came to the plate with two outs, before Trasher threw a pitch that soared over catcher Elizabeth Riley's head, scoring Carr and giving Bowdoin the victory. Rachel Gordon reached base five times for Bowdoin, while Carr scored twice and Rizza went 2-3.
