Burton, Coach
Tom Burton enters his second year as the head coach of the Colby Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams. In his first season both teams returned to the NCAA Division III Championships and the women recorded one of their finest seasons in history. In the process, Colby swimmers and divers set 16 new school records and earned multiple post season awards. Burton comes to Colby via Lake Forest College where his teams won seven Midwest Conference Championships and were annually ranked in the top 25 of the NCAA. Burton was honored by the Midwest Conference as coach of the year in 1994-1995, 1996-1997 and 1997-1998. Burton was also named the Illinois Collegiate coach of the year in 1995-1996 and 1996-1997. In addition, he was awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Coaching from the ASCA in 1994 and 1997. Prior to his tenure at Lake Forest, Burton served for four years as an assistant coach at Hamilton College and as the head coach of the USS Clinton Swim Club. During his twelve year coaching career Burton's athletes have competed at USS Senior and Junior National Meets, won an NCAA national title and have received numerous All-American, Academic All-American, NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, and GTE Academic All-American honors. The foundation of this dual success is coach Burton's dedication to his student-athletes as they balance collegiate academics and athletics. Burton resides in Oakland, ME with his wife (Lisa), son (Tanner), daughter (Mackenzie) and black lab (Dex). |
