Tom Burton, Head Coach
The 2001-02 season marks Tom Burton's 13th year as a collegiate coach and his third year as the head coach of Colby's men's and women's swimming and diving teams. During his first two seasons at Colby, his swimmers and divers have rewritten the record books, setting 45 new school records and earning multiple post-season awards and All-America honors. In recognition of achievement of his men's team at the national level, Burton was honored with ASCA's Certificate of Excellence in Coaching. In addition, Burton was named the 2001 NESCAC Women's Swimming Coach of the Year for his women's performances at the conference level. During his career Burton's athletes have competed at USS Senior and Junior National Meets, obtained US Open and Olympic Trial qualifying standards, won an NCAA national title and received numerous All-America, Academic All-America, NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, and GTE Academic All-America honors.
Prior to Colby, Burton served for six years as the head swimming coach at Lake Forest College where his teams won eight Midwest Conference Championships and were annually ranked in the top 25 of the NCAA. Burton was honored by the Midwest Conference as coach of the year in 1994-95, 1996-97, and 1997-98. He was also named the Illinois Collegiate coach of the year in 1995-96 and 1996-97. In addition, Burton was awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Coaching from the American Swim Coaches Association in both 1994, 1997, and 2001.
Josh Gurekovich, Assistant Coach
Josh Gurekovich returns for his second year as the assistant coach for the Mules. Gurekovich, an All-American sprinter for Westminster College, brings strong leadership and motivational abilities to the team along with a solid grasp of skill development. In addition, to his involvement in administering daily practices, he is responsible for the development and monitoring of all weight, dryland and flexibility programs. Prior to arriving at Colby, Gurekovich spent one year working as a coaching intern at Westminster.
Stew Stokes, Assistant Coach
Stew Stokes returns for his second year as an assistant on the Mules Swimming & Diving staff. Last season saw Stokes split his time between the racing lanes and the boards, but with the departure of incumbent diving coach Doug Hall, Coach Stokes will take over the reins of the Mule Diving Program. Coach Stokes, a graduate of the University of Massachusetts (1990), also serves as the head crew coach at Colby. In 1993, Stokes competed as a member of the men's lightweight eight on the United States Rowing Team.
