Tom Burton, Head CoachIn his first five years at Colby, Tom Burton's swimmers and divers have rewritten the record books by setting 82 school records and several NESCAC records. His swimmers and divers have been honored with Colbyís Millett, Bither, Lake, and White awards for outstanding athletic and academic achievement. In 2001 Burton was named NESCAC Women's Swimming Coach of the Year. He has been awarded the Certificate of Excellence four times by the American Swim Coaches Association, including in 2004. Burton previously served for six years as the head swimming coach at Lake Forest College, where his teams won eight conference championships. He served as the chair of swimming for the Midwest Conference Championships (MWC) for five years, was honored as MWC Coach of the Year three out of six seasons, and was Illinois Collegiate Coach of the Year twice. During Burtonís career, 37 of his swimmers have competed in the NCAA Championships and have recorded 54 All-America performances, including a national title. In addition, his athletes have competed at Senior and Junior national meets, obtained U.S. Open and Olympic Trial qualifying standards, and earned Academic All-America, NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, and GTE Academic All-America honors. Burton also serves as assistant athletic director at Colby for the third consecutive year. phone 207-859-4922 Jess Knight, Assistant Coach Colby College graduate Jess Knight '02 will begin her first season as assistant swimming coach under head coach Tom Burton. Knight (Choate Rosemary/Watertown, Conn.) still holds school records in the 50-yard backstroke and as part of a 200 medley relay team. During her career at Colby, Knight held records in the 100 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay, and 400 medley relay. Knight, who majored in anthropology at Colby, held the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) record in the 100 individual medley and was the NESCAC champion in the 100 IM in 1999, 2000, and 2002. She finished third in the NESCAC Championship High Point Award for scoring the third most points of any woman from any NESCAC school over four years of competition. Knight earned All-NESCAC honors in 2001 and 2002. Knight earned All-New England honors in each of her four seasons at Colby. She was the Mules' MVP in 1999, 2001, and 2002. A captain during the 2001-2002 season, Knight earned NESCAC All-Academic honors in 2002. She was Colby's Marjorie D. Bither Award winner as a senior for athletic ability, leadership, and academic accomplishment. Knight also won the swim team's Scholtz Coaches Award in 2001 and 2002.
