 2002 Season Outlook

Women's Tennis

Colby Women's Tennis (CWT) is one of the most competitive teams in New England and currently holds an ITA Northeast regional ranking of #9 and an ITA national ranking of #27. The fall 2001 women's team also placed 9th out of 25 teams at the annual New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament(NEWITT) held at Amherst College. CWT posted a winning record of 4-3 that included solid dual match victories over MIT, Bates, Connecticut, and USM. CWT demonstrated a number of stand-out performances in singles over the fall season. #1 singles player, Sara Hughes '05, reached the quarterfinals of the 2001 ITA Regional Tournament. Sara is currently ranked #9 regionally and #36 nationally. #2 singles player, Britt Palmedo '03, reached the quarterfinals of the # 2 singles flight at NEWITT and finished the season with a 9-3 record. Britt is currently ranked #24 regionally.

CWT also displayed a number of stellar performances in doubles. The freshmen #1 doubles combo of Sara Hughes and Christina Pluta reached the quarterfinals of the #1 doubles flight at NEWITT and are currently ranked #14 regionally. The junior #2 combo of Britt Palmedo and Caren Harris reached the semi-finals of the #2 flight at NEWITT. And, the #3 doubles combo of Paige Hanzlik '05 and Jenny Grace '03 reached the quarterfinals of the #3 singles flight at NEWITT.

Colby competes in the NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference), one of the toughest conferences in the nation for Division III women's tennis. Typically three to four NESCAC schools represent the ITA east region at the NCAA Team and Individual Championships every year. Other NESCAC members include Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Connecticut, Hamilton, Middlebury, Trinity, Tufts, Wesleyan, and Williams. This year, the women's team will travel with the men's team over Spring Break to California and compete cross-regionally. We are looking forward to a great spring season!
