October 26, 2001

Colby College's number one seed, freshman Sara Hughes (S. Burlington, Vt.) had a bye in the first round of the NEWITT Championship, and advanced to the round of 16 to play the Williams College number one seed and last year's NEWITT champion Selma Kikic.  Hughes matched up well against Kikic, playing her to a 6-4, 0-6, and 6-2 loss.  Selma Kikic would go on to win the number one seed championships, again.  Click here to see the #1 flight bracket and results.

Junior Britt Palmedo (Ketchum, ID), Colby's number two seed and seeded 4th in the singles flight #2 for the NEWITT Championships, played Hilary Johnson of Middlebury in the round of 32.  Palmedo beat Johnson in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) to advance into the round of 16 against Paulette Hricko of Bowdoin.  Palmedo cleaned up on Hricko winning after two sets, 6-2 and 6-1.  In the third round, the round of 8, Palmedo was matched up against Erika Lee of Tufts.  After three hard fought sets, Palmedo lost, 4-6, 6-0, and 7-5.  Click here to see the #2 flight bracket and results.

Colby's number three seed and seeded 4th in the singles flight #3 for the NEWITT Championships, freshman Christina Pluta (Seattle, WA) got off to a good start by beating out Julie Castle of Endicott, 6-2 and 6-0.  Pluta advanced to the round of 16 to play Abby Lerner of Brandeis.  Pluta lost the match, 6-2, 6-0.  Click here to see the #3 flight bracket and results.

Junior Caren Harris (Fairview Village, PA), Colby's number four seed, had a bye in the round of 32, automatically advancing her to the next round.  In the round of 16, Harris was matched up against Heidi Kashani of Tufts.  After two sets, Kashani came out on top, winning 6-0 and 6-2.  Click here to see the #4 flight bracket and results.

Freshman Paige Hanzlik (Oak Brook, IL), Colby's number five seed, was matched against Vas Kozoulina of Amherst in the round of 32.  Hanzlik was unable to get past Kozoulina and advance into the next round, losing both matches 6-3 and 6-1.  Click here to see the #5 flight bracket and results.

Colby College's number six seed, junior Jenny Grace (Darien, Conn.), played Esther Handy of Wellsley in the round of 32.  Grace was also unable to get past her opposition and advance into the round of 16.  After two tough sets, Grace lost 6-3 and 6-3.  Click here to see the #6 flight bracket and results.

In doubles action, Colby College's Hughes and Pluta made it all the way to the round of 8 as the first doubles team.  In their first round, they had a bye, advancing them to the round of 16 against Bawden and Hayes of Bowdoin.  Hughes and Pluta beat this team from Bowdoin 8-4, advancing them to the round of 8.  They were matched up against Kikic and Hall of Williams.  Hughes and Pluta eventually lost 8-1. Click here to see the #1 doubles flight bracket and results.

Colby's second doubles team, Palmedo and Harris, made it to the quarterfinals, where they lost to the team from Amherst that would go on to win the doubles #2 championships.  In the first round, Palmedo and Harris were matched up against Castle and Poulsen of Endicott.  Palmedo and Harris beat them quite handily, winning 8-2.  In the second round, they played Lee and Saeed of Tufts.  Again Palmedo and Harris, after a hard fought, grueling match, won 9-7.  In the round of 8, Palmedo and Harris brought their 'A' game and destroyed the pair from Bates College, Devito and Hoffman, winning  8-1 and advancing to the quarterfinals.  In the quarterfinals, Palmedo and Harris were matched up against Lawrence and Kozoulina of Amherst.  After coming out extremely tough and leading the match 3-0, Palmedo and Harris lost to the eventual NEWITT champions for the flight #2 doubles, Lawrence and Kozoulina, 8-3.  Click here to see the #2 doubles flight bracket and results.

And Colby's final doubles team of Hanzlik and Grace made their way to the third round.  In the round of 32, Hanzlik and Grace played Lo and Calao of Wesleyan defeating the doubles team 8-4, and advancing to the sweet sixteen.  In the second round, Hanzlik and Grace encountered Buro and Scardilli of Salve Regina.  The meeting of the two doubles pairs was brief as Hanzlik and Grace blanked Buro and Scardilli, 8-0.  In the round of 8, Hanzlik and Grace were matched up against Goldman and Huebner of Trinity.  After advancing to the elite 8, Hanzlik and Grace met their demise losing 8-3.  Click here to see the #3 doubles flight bracket and results.
