 2003 Spring Preview
The Colby women's tennis team had a successful fall season and are currently ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region. The Mules finished in 10th place out of 26 teams at the New England Women's Tennis Tournament.
Sophomore Sara Hughes and senior Britt Palmedo, Colby's No. 1 doubles team, made it to the finals of the No. 1 doubles flight at the tournament. The pair upset Bowdoin and Williams, two teams with top-four seeds, to make the final. The women took an 8-3 win over the Bowdoin doubles team in the quarterfinals and then caputred an exciting 8-6 victory over the Williams pair.
Hughes and Palmedo fought hard in the final before falling 9-7 to a team from Amherst. The Colby duo start the spring season ranked fourth in the ITA Northeast Region and 14th in the country in NCAA Division III.
The team will look to build on their success from the fall with a busy spring. The Mules will play eight dual matches, the NESCAC Championship Tournament and will look forward to a possible berth to team or individual competition in the NCAA Tournament.
Colby will be playing three teams ranked ahead of them, giving the Mules a good chance to improve their team ranking. The spring season looks bright and exciting.
