Colby Women's Tennis 2003-2004 Season Preview

The Colby women finished 30th in the country last year in Division III and junior Sara Hughes went to the NCAA tournament for singles and doubles play.

Hughes, the NESCAC Co-Player of the Year returns for the spring season after missing the fall portion of the schedule after studying abroad. Hughes went 32-13 overall while playing first singles and doubles and the junior earned All-America status for finishing ninth in the country in doubles with Britt Palmedo '03.

Hughes will once again be the top singles player and will team up with promising first-year player Allison Dunn at first doubles. Dunn went 5-4 during the fall season at first singles, but will play at the second spot during the spring.

Paige Hanzlik is expected to play the third singles spot for new head coach Michael Morgan. Christina Pluta returns after winning 18 matches in singles and doubles player last year.

Colby will play against Brandeis University at 4 p.m. and then against Hamilton College at 8 p.m. in matches at Middlebury College on Saturday.

All-Americans
Sara Hughes '05 and Britt Palmedo '03 earned All-American status by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for doubles during the 2003 season. The pair finished the season ranked ninth in the country by the ITA in NCAA Division III doubles. The ranking was the best ever at Colby.

Hughes and Palmedo went 16-6 at first doubles and played against some of the best competition in the country. Four of the top 10 doubles squads in Division III came from New England Small College Athletic Conference schools. With Palmedo graduating, Hughes will be looking for a new doubles partner next year.
