Cheah Wins Maine Singles Title
5/1/99
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Colby College senior Kim Cheah (Penang, Malaysia) defeated
Bowdoin's Andrea Gagnon (Gardiner, Me.) in straight sets to claim the 1999 Maine
State Invitational Women's Singles title on Saturday afternoon. In addition to
her singles triumph, Cheah and first-year teammate Kendra Shank (Edina, Minn.)
advanced all the way to the finals of the doubles bracket before falling to
Bowdoin's duo of Gagnon and Katie Sheridan (Marblehead, Mass.) in a three-set
battle.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Cheah swept Bowdoin's Brooke Jacobsen
(Marian, Mass.) and Kim Bohlin (Winchester, Mass.) to reach the finals. The White
Mules' senior captain then cruised past Gagnon, 6-1, 6-1, to win the tournament
title.
In other singles action, Shank, Lisa Mark (Beverly Hills, Mich.) and Erica Goss
(Stowe, Vt.) each lost in the first round for Colby, but Shank went on to win the
consolation bracket. On the doubles side, Mark and Goss teamed up to win their
first-round match, but then faced teammates Cheah and Shank, who defeated them by
a score of 8-2. Cheah and Shank then took the first set of the championship
match, 6-2, but Gagnon and Sheridan rallied to win the final two sets, 6-3, 6-2,
to claim the doubles championship.
