Men's Track & Field at Colby

An NCAA Champion, a six place finish at the New England Division III meet, and a relay team that almost set a new school record were highklights to this year's outdoor season that started with a spring trip to San Diego, California.

Hammer throwers Jamie Brewster (00) and Nate Laing (00) were the sole representatives for Colby at the national meet, held in at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. Jamie once again proved why he was the best hammer throw in the country by winning the competition for an unprecidented third time in four years. His previous wins were in 1997 and 1998.

The New England Division III meet produced many seasonal personal bests. Colby placed sixth out of 23 teams. The hammer throwers came through immensely, while scoring 23 points. Jamie Brewster won the hammer with a toss of 192' 4". Lee Rankin (03) placed fifth in the hammer and showed that he was a threat to other teams by throwing an NCAA provisional mark of 171' 3". Nate Laing won the discus with a toss of 135' 5". Jared Beers (01) and Emil Thomann (00) ran seasonal PR's in the 400m final by placing third and fifth, respectively, in 48.96 and 49.33. Geoff Cole (00) ran a lifetime PR in the 400m hurdles with a 55.94 performance. Christano Andrade ran a season best 22.76 in the preliminaries of the 200m, and later finished sixth in the final. The 4 x 400m relay team of Thomann, Pete Aykroyd (00), Coji Watanabe (01), and Beers ran a seasonal PR of 3:21.19 in placing fourth. An almost record breaking day was had by the 4 x 100m relay team of Dan Martin (01), Beers, Thomann, and Lee Carlson (03) as they placed second with a time of 42.30, two one-hundreths of a second off the school record. This was a fitting ending to the successfull outdoor season for the Mules.

In the October 31, 1994 Sports Illustrated article, "Pure and Simple," Douglas Looney describes NESCAC athletes as competing on their chosen teams for one reason: love of the sport. This is a must-read article for any prospective NESCAC student-athlete.
