Colby Track and Field
Since the women's track and field program began in 1978, the team has claimed four New England Division III titles, three MAIAW championships, and four NESCAC titles. In its history, Colby's indoor and outdoor track and field programs have garnered 47 All-America awards and produced 84 NCAA national qualifiers. The team, whose roster numbers approximately 35-45, competes in 21 events and has a coaching staff of six led by Debbie Aitken.
The 2001 squad had a very successful season, placing fourth at the NESCAC Conference Meet and third at the New England Division III Championship. Sophomore Connie Beal qualified for the Indoor National Meet in the weight throw, finishing 12th. The outdoor season saw four individuals hit provisional qualifying standards, but only sophomores Beal and Michelle Keady made the cuts. Keady qualified in the hammer, finishing 15th at Nationals in her first year in the event. Beal also qualified in the hammer finishing just ahead of Keady (14th) , but also qualified in the shot put, entering the event seeded 18th and finishing an outstanding seventh with a personal best throw of 43'5.75". That throw earned her All America honors.
The 2002 team will again be young with only four seniors on the roster and several juniors studying abroad. Leadership will come from captains Mindy Pinto '02 (middle distance), Gayle Pageau '02 (distance), Claudia Laverde '02 (throws), Meg McCusker '02 (throws, middle distance), Shannon Corliss '03 (jumps, multi events), and Liz Frederick '03 (sprints, pole vault). With another young group, the 2002 season should prove to be a rebuilding year, but a group of talented first-year students along with seasoned veterans could maintain Colby's competitive edge.
Both the indoor and outdoor teams have seen a great deal of success, however emphasis is placed on team balance and the individual development of each team member. Individual as well as team goals are established for each season and plans are established to ensure that all attainable goals are reached.
