Debbie Aitken, Head Coach
With a coaching staff of six, head coach Debbie Aitken ensures that every team member gets the individual attention they need. In her 17th year at Colby Aitken teams up with five dedicated and knowledgeable individuals to provide every athlete with the direction and technical advice for success.
Deb Aitken brings 23 years of collegiate coaching experience to Mayflower Hill. From 1978 to 1984 Aitken served as the head coach at SUNY Cortland before coming to Colby in 1985. In her tenure, the Skowhegan, Maine, native has led the women's program to State and New England crowns. She heads up the middle distance-distance runners as well as the horizontal jumpers and multi-event athletes.
Dan Camann,a drafting and wood technology teacher at Winslow High School, has coached Colby's men and women hammer and discus throwers for 13 years. Colby's hammer throwers have earned great respect in the New England Region for their consistent success, including two-time All-American Brooke Lorenzen '95 and All-American Danielle LeGrand '96 in the 20 # weight throw.
Dick Whately, who coached All-America shot putters and javelin throwers as head coach at Ursinus College (Pa.), retired, moved to Maine, and joined our coaching staff in 1993. Dick has seen his athletes gain NESCAC, New England Division III, ECAC, and national rankings in both shot put and javelin. Connie Beal '03 is Coach Whately's first All-America shot putter at Colby.
Bill Lund, an assistant football coach at Colby and former discus thrower, joined the staff in 2000 to become Colby's pole vault coach. Although new to the event, Coach Lund coached his vaulters to new personal bests. Sophomore Liz Frederick set a new school record (10'8") and provisionally qualified for Nationals. Coach Lund brings coaching experience and a great deal of enthusiasm and knowledge to the event.
Bill Cooper, a sprinter and soccer player and 1996 graduate of Heidelberg College, achieved All-America status in the 400 meter, clocking a 47.99. Cooper holds eight school records in individual and relay events as well as a conference record in the 400 meter. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Cooper received his master's from the University of Dayton and was an assistant track and field coach at Hartwick College in 2001. Cooper received his Level II USA T&F certification this summer in sprints and hurdles and joins our staff as the sprints and hurdles coach.
Head men's coach, Jim Wescott enters his 24th year of coaching track and field at Colby and will coach both men and women in the high jump. The New Hampshire native was the head track and field coach at North Carolina State University for nine years prior to coming to Mayflower Hill in 1978. He brings experience and expertise to all events.
