Women's Track and Field at Colby

Since the women's track and field program began in 1978, the team has claimed four New England Division III titles, one MAIAW championship and four NESCAC titles. In its history, Colby's indoor and outdoor track and field programs have garnered 45 All-Americans and produced 81 NCAA national qualifiers. The team, whose roster numbers approximately 35-45, competes in 21 events and has a coaching staff of five led by Debbie Aitken. The 1999 squad, having a rebuilding season, placed third at the NESCAC Conference Meet, eighth at the NE Div. III Championship and ninth at the ECAC Championship.

The 2000 team was led by its largest senior group ever. Thirteen seniors provided strength, depth and experience to an already talented team. Senior captains Faith Anderson (hurdles/jumps/multi events), Jeannine Bergquist (middle distance), Karen Hoch (throws), Katie LaRochelle, (sprints) and Nicole Neault (distance/middle distance) led their respective event areas to higher goals then achieved during the '99 season.

The 2000 season was highlighted by a second place team finish at the ECAC Championships, third place finishes at both the NESCAC and New England Division III Championships, and two All-American performances.

The ECAC Championships showcased the talent of the Lady Mules. The throws group was the foundation of the team as they won three of the four events. Karen Hoch (00) tossed a school record 131' 2" while winning the discus. Freshman Connie Beal came from behind the leaders in her last throw to win the shot put (39' 9.5"). Kim McCarron again proved why she was one of the nation's best in winning the hammer with a 159' 5" heave. The lone win on the track came from the quartet of Ali Hill (03), Ann Birenbaum (00), Katie LaRochelle (00), and Jeanine Bergquist (00) in the 4 x 400m relay (4:04.75). The Lady Mules finished a close second behind Bowdoin, 131 to 134.

Five women competed for Colby at the nationals, held at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. Sarah Toland led the charge by placing third in both the 3000m and 5000m in school-record times of 9:40.32 and 16:58.92, respectively. The other team members who competed at their best for Colby were Maria Mensching (02) (10,000m), Faith Anderson (00) (heptathlon), Nicole Neault (00) (1500m), and Kim McCarron (hammer).

Although both indoor and outdoor teams have seen a great deal of success, emphasis is put on team balance and the individual development of each team member. Individual as well as team goals are established for each season and every attempt is made to see each team member reach her goals.
