Women's Track and Field at Colby

Return to Current Site

Since the women's track and field program began in 1978, the team has claimed four New England Division III titles, three MAIAW championships and four NESCAC titles. In its history, Colby's indoor and outdoor track and field programs have garnered 45 All-Americans and produced 79 NCAA national qualifiers. The team, whose roster numbers approximately 35 - 45, competes in 21 events and has a coaching staff of six led by Debbie Aitken.

The 2000 squad, having a very successful season, placed third at the NESCAC Conference Meet, third at the NE Div.III Championship and second at the ECAC Championship. Five team members qualified for the Indoor National Meet resulting in an All American Distance Medley Relay team and senior Sarah Toland earning All America Honors in the 1500m. The Outdoor Season saw five individuals qualify for the NCAA Div III National Meet. Faith Anderson placed 10th in the heptathlon, Maria Mensching finished 13th in the 10,000m, Kim McCarron finished 17th in the hammer, Nicole Neault finished 14th in the 1500m and Sarah Toland earned All America honors by finishing 3rd in both the 3000m and the 5000m.

The 2001 team will be the youngest in many years with only four seniors on the roster and several juniors studying abroad. Leadership will come from captains Kate Isley, '01, (middle distance and multi events), Gayle Pageau, '02 (distance), Claudia Laverde, '02 (throws), Meg McCusker '02 (throws, middle distance), Shannon Corliss '03, (jumps) and Jackie Johnson '01, (sprints). With a young group, the '01 season should prove to be a rebuilding year, but a group of talented first year students along with seasoned returning veterans could maintain Colby's competitive edge.

Both indoor and outdoor teams have seen a great deal of success, however emphasis is put on team balance and the individual development of each team member. Individual as well as team goals are established for each season and every attempt is made to see that each team member reaches her goals.
