Colby finished the 2001 season with a 17-12 overall record. During the season Colby was ranked as high as ninth in New England, the highest ranking in the program's history. The State of Maine Championship was held on Mayflower Hill with 11 colleges from Maine competing. Colby upset number one seed and archrival Bates in the finals by winning three straight games, 30-25, 30-28, and 30-16. Three players were named to the All-State First Team--Amanda Cuiffo '02 (fourth straight year), Johanna Schroeder '04, and Kimberly Prescott '04. The team immediately earned respect with a four-game victory over NESCAC opponent Wesleyan, who went on to be the number one seed in the tournament with Colby as their only loss. Colby also beat Tufts for the second time in the history of the program. With wins over the top and the fourth seeds in NESCAC, Colby was selected as the sixth seed for the first-ever, eight-team NESCAC Championship.
