Women's Volleyball Week 1

White Mules dominate Monks

WATERVILLE, Me. - In the home opener for the Colby College White Mules, the women's volleyball team only needed one hour and fifteen minutes to win their match against the St. Joseph's College of Maine Monks, 3 - 0.

St. Joseph's College of Maine Monks came to Wadsworth Gymnasium to build on their home opening tournament in which they won their first match against Unity College, 3-0 and lost their subsequent matches to the University of Southern Maine, Rivier College and the University of Maine-Machias. Entering today's contest, the Monks were 1-3 overall and were anxious to get back on the winning track. However, St. Joseph's chances and expectations were extinguished right from the start of the match.

The Colby College White Mules, under the leadership and strength of their upper classmen, came out strong and never looked back. Leading the way for the White Mules was Amanda Cuiffo '02 (Waban, MA) who had 9 digs, 9 kills, and 1 serving ace; Anne Tricomi '02 (Braintree, MA) had 8 digs and 6 serving aces; and Laurel Burnham '03 (Bailey's Harbor, WI) had 22 assists and 5 kills for the White Mules. The sophomore contingency of Abbey Stella (Westfield, MA) and Alyssa Henley (Spokane, WA) accounted for 7 kills, 4 blocks, 6 serving aces and 7 kills, 4 digs, respectively.

On a more personal note, Colby College's Abbey Stella '04 (Westfield, MA), who served five aces in one game, ties the school record for the most serving aces in a game which is held by current players Laurel Burnham and Anne Tricomi.

The Colby College White Mules are back in action this weekend September 14-15, 2001, as they travel to Bates College for a NESCAC weekend.
