Women's Volleyball Week 2



White Mules go .500 at Invitational



Lewiston, Me. - Traveling down to Bates College for the Bates Invitational, the Colby College women's volleyball team faced rival NESCAC teams in a very important Quad match. The White Mules would face Wesleyan University, Trinity College, host team, Bates College and Connecticut College over two days, Saturday September 15, 2001 and Sunday September 16, 2001.

In Saturday's action, the White Mules faced the Cardinals of Wesleyan University first. During the match, "a balanced offensive attack, smart aggressive serving and great defense" enabled Colby to beat Wesleyan, 3-1. Colby won the first two games, 30-25 and 30-26; lost the third game to Wesleyan, 22-30 and finally came away with the victory with a 30-28 win of the fourth game. In the match, senior co-captain Anne Tricomi (Braintree, MA) had 3 serving aces, 9 kills and 27 digs; junior Melanie Newton (Kalamazoo, MI) had 10 digs; sophomores Kimberly Prescott (Buena Park, CA) had 35 assists and 10 digs, Abbey Stella (Westfield, MA) had 2 serving aces and 10 kills, Johanna Schroeder (Salmon, ID) had 6 digs and 3 blocks, and Alyssa Henley (Spokane, WA) had 7 kills and 3 blocks. Senior co-captain Amanda Cuiffo (Waban, MA) left the match during the second game due to an injury.

In the second match, Colby College faced the Bantams of Trinity College. In the match, that went back and forth as Colby and Trinity traded games, the White Mules lost the fifth game and the match when "too many unforced errors..." and excellent Bantam blocking allowed Trinity to win, 6-15 and 2-3. Colby College lost the first game, 25-30; won the second game, 30-24; lost the third game, 24-30; won the fourth game, 30-20 and lost the last game 6-15. In the game, Amanda Cuiffo was back in action as she had 14 kills and 23 digs; Anne Tricomi had 4 serving aces, 7 kills and 19 digs; Kimberly Prescott had 2 serving aces, 42 assists and 12 digs; Alyssa Henley had 9 kills and 2 blocks; Johanna Schroeder had 9 kills and 12 digs; and Abbey Stella had 4 serving aces, 12 kills and 2 blocks.

In the second day of action, the White Mules faced Connecticut College and Bates College. In the matches, the White Mules downed the Camels of Connecticut College in three games, 3-0. Colby won the games 30-27, 30-10, and 30-23.

In the final match of the Quad Invitational, Colby lost to the host team, Bates College, 1-3. The White Mules lost the first game, 30-25; won the second game, 30-26; lost the third game, 31-29; and the fourth game, 30-20.

Colby College left the Bates College Invitational 2-2 with their matches and 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the NESCAC.

The Colby College White Mules are back in action this Wednesday September 19, 2001, as they play host to State of Maine, NESCAC and CBB rival, Bowdoin College. The match begins at 7:00 pm.
