White Mules Ace Huskies 3-0
GORHAM,
Maine -- The Colby College White Mules used a balanced offensive
attack and 23 service aces to
defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies
3-0 Wednesday evening in a
non-conference volleyball match at the Warren G. Hill
Gymnasium.
The
White Mules dominated the first two games, winning by scores of 30-12
and 30-11. Southern Maine grabbed the early lead
in the third and decisive
game, but Colby rallied late for a
30-25 win. The win improved the
White Mules
overall mark to 14-11. Southern Maine dropped its fourth
straight match to fall
to 14-13.
Leading
the White Mules up front was sophomore Alyssa Henley (Spokane,
Wash.) with 10 kills and a pair of
blocks. Senior Amanda Cuiffo
(Waban, Mass.)
and sophomore Abby Stella
(Westfield, Mass.) each added nine kills.
Cuiffo also
had a team-leading 10 digs while
Stella served up five aces. Junior
Laurel
Burnham (Bailey's harbor, Wis.)
had five aces, five kills and eight digs.
Sophomore setter Kim Prescott
(Buena Park, Calif.) quarterbacked the offense,
passing out 28 assists. She also
had five aces and seven digs.
For
the Huskies, senior Meaghan Lumbis (Leverett, Mass.) had eight kills.
Sophomore Caitlin Leonard
(Peabody, Mass.) had three service aces in the third
game to spark the Huskies' early
lead. Senior Celine Cote (Milan,
N.H.) had
eight digs. The Huskies were hurt by their
inability to return serve.
Both
teams will be participating in the State of Maine Volleyball
Championship this Friday and
Saturday, being hosted at Colby.
Southern Maine,
the third seed, will play UMaine
Machias in its first match Friday at 7 p.m.
Colby, the second seed, will play
the winner of the match between St. Joseph's
College and Husson College, at 7
p.m.
