Colby Splits at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Colby College Volleyball team showed tremendous character on Saturday as they came back strong from a tough loss to defeat Gordon, 3-0, in the Bates College Round Robin Tournament.

The first match of the day featured the White Mules and the host Bobcats. In a grueling battle, Bates won the first game 16-14, and then edged Colby again in the second game, 15-13. The two close defeats appeared to break the White Mules' spirit a bit, as the Bobcats finished them off quickly in the third game, 15-6.

Despite the loss, several players did well for Colby. Amanda Cuiffo (Waban, Mass./Newton South) had nine kills and 10 digs, Reagan Carey (Prospect, Kent./Kentucky Country Day) recorded six kills and five blocks, and Kelly-Ann Kenney (Norwood, Mass./Ursuline Academy) dished out 19 assists.

While most young teams might have allowed such a difficult defeat to carry over into their next match, Colby rebounded well in its second contest of the day. Facing the Fighting Scots of Gordon, the White Mules played much better defense on their way to the 3-0 victory. Co-captain Missy Fiebelkorn (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) led the way with four aces, 30 assists, and six digs, while Cuiffo added one ace, 13 kills, and 10 digs. Co-captain Randi Martin (Concord, N.H./Concord) chipped in with six kills and six blocks, and Carey again played well, recording six kills and five blocks.

The split moves Colby's record to 1-4 on the season, while Bates improved to 4-1 and Gordon fell to 4-4.
