WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS TUFTS IN SUDDEN DEATH
Jesse Knoll '00 (Portland, OR) scored the winning goal to defeat Tufts University in the first period of sudden death overtime. With the score tied 1-1 preceding overtime, Knoll's corner kick made the final score 2-1.
Colby's Kathryn Rowen '01 (Virginia Beach, VA) scored the only goal of the first half on an assist from Knoll. The score at half-time was 1-0. Tufts' Amanda Nagler scored a free kick in the second half to tie the score at 1 and force an overtime sudden death shoot-out.
Heather Garni '99 (Wellesley, MA) recorded 8 saves, while Tufts' Jen Starrett managed 17. Total shots-on-goal for Colby were 19; Tufts had 10.

COLBY FIELD HOCKEY DEFEATS TUFTS IN 3 OVERTIMES
In the third overtime, after two scoreless regulation halves, Jaime Cassidy '00 (Warwick, RI) and Robynne DeCaprio '00 (Chelmsford, MA) scored the second and third penalty strokes to defeat Tufts University 1-0.
Colby goalie Jane Stevens '00 (Bethesda, MD) recorded 26 saves, four coming in the third overtime, while Tufts goalie Lindsey Schell made 8.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY FINISHES SECOND IN FIRST MEET OF SEASON
Colby finished with 54 points, second behind Bowdoin's 19. The University of New Brunswick finished third with 63 points.
Top individual finishers for Colby were Sam Harris '98, 6 (27:30) and Wilson Everhart '99, 7 (27:33). First-year Brendan Gavin finished 11th with a time of 28:48 and Rory Maher '98 finished 14th in a time of 29:20.
The race took place in Freeport, Maine at Wolfe's Neck Farm over a distance of 5 miles. The winning time was by Bowdoin's Michael Peyron in 27:04.
TUFTS MEN'S SOCCER SHUTS OUT COLBY
Tufts University defeated Colby 2-0, scoring both goals in the first half. Zach Dewhirst scored late in the half off an assist from Evan Dabby. Matt Adler followed next, assisted by David Trouille, scoring with only five minutes remaining in the half.
Tufts goalkeeper Steve McDermid recorded 3 saves and 15 shots-on-goal, while Colby goalkeeper Graham Nelson '98 (N. Andover, MA) had 6 saves and 6 shots-on-goal.

WILLIAMS FOOTBALL DEFEATS COLBY IN SEASON OPENER
The Williams College Ephs began their football season with a defeat of the Colby White Mules 26-6 in Waterville, Maine. Colby's lone win against Williams came 38 years ago, a 42-14 decision in 1959.
Williams passing attack led the way, compiling 251 yards. Peter Supino was 12-21 with 188 yards, and Ian Macallister was the receiving leader with 4 catches for 90 yards.
The game was competitive nearly in its entirety, as the halftime score of 6-6 indicated. The lone Colby touchdown was scored by fullback Don Gage '99 (Clearwater, FL) who amassed 158 rushing yards on 19 carries. Quarterback Nate Bradley '99 (Norridgewock, ME) was 11-24 for 124 yards and two interceptions.
Williams' Chris Cuneo had 12 carries for 56 yards and one touchdown. Other significant Williams contributors were Michael McAdam who rushed for one touchdown, and Adam Pace scored the winning touchdown with 13 minutes remaining off a fumble recovery.

WOMEN'S TENNIS SPLITS AGAINST TUFTS AND M.I.T.
Colby's women's tennis fell to Tufts Saturday, September 20 6-3, but rebounded Sunday to defeat M.I.T., a refreshing win after losing to M.I.T. 9-0 last year.
Singles winners against Tufts were Jessie Anderson '98 (Norwell, MA), 6-2, 6-2 and Kim Cheah '99 (Penang, Malaysia), 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. The lone winning doubles team was Anderson and Cheah, 8-6.
On Sunday against M.I.T., Jessie Anderson again won her singles match 6-1, 7-6. Lisa Mark '01 (Beverly Hills, MI) won her singles match 6-4, 6-4. Other singles winners were Sarah Sweeney '00 (East Falmouth, MA), 6-4, 6-2, and Amy Sokotch '00 (New York, NY).
Colby dominated in doubles, winning 2 of 3 matches. Anderson and Cheah and Sweeney and Sokotch were the winning combinations.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL FINISHES FOURTH IN BATES ROUND ROBIN
Colby volleyball defeated Rowan College (N.J.) to place fourth in the Bates Round Robin Tournament Friday and Saturday, September 19-20.
Jackie Bates '98 (Spokane, WA) delivered a consistent performance throughout the tournament, earning her a selection on the All-Tournament team. In the first game, a 3-1 (15-6, 15-10, 10-15, 15-10) loss to Gordon College, Bates had 13 kills, 15 digs and one block. Missy Fiebelkorn '00 (Minnetonka, MN) had one ace, 34 assists and 12 digs. Randi Martin '99 (Bow, NH) had 9 kills, 4 digs and 5 blocks.
Colby was victorious in the second game of the tournament, defeating Rowan College (NJ) by a score of 3-1 (15-8, 15-3, 7-15, 15-9). Fiebelkorn contributed 18 assists, 12 digs, and 1 ace, while Martin had 8 kills, 14 digs, 3 blocks. Bates tallied 11 kills and 11 digs in another strong showing.
In the fourth game, on Saturday, a 3-1 loss to Bates (4-15, 15-8, 15-8, 15-5), Jackie Bates led Colby with 9 kills and twelve digs. Fiebelkorn provided key support to Colby's hitters with 21 assists and 5 digs. Martin also had a commendable performance, contributing 5 kills, 7 digs, and 6 blocks.
The final game of the tournament matched Colby against Middlebury, the undefeated victor in the final standings of the tournament. Kirsten Stoller '99 (Chagrin Falls, OH) added support in both the offensive and defensive games with 9 kills and 14 digs. Bates had 15 kills and 8 digs, while Martin tallied 1 ace, 10 kills, and 2 blocks.

STEVENS NAMED NESCAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chevy Chase field hockey goalie contributes game-winning performance
Colby College field hockey player Jane Stevens '01 (Chevy Chase, MD) was the key factor in the team's three overtime defeat of New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Tufts University on Saturday, September 20. Stevens' performance earned her the honor of co-NESCAC player of the week for field hockey, a weekly award given to players in the conference who demonstrate superior performances for their team.
The game against Tufts remained deadlocked through regulation at 0 and it was only in the third overtime, using penalty strokes, that Colby emerged with a 1-0 victory.
Faced with six penalty strokes from Tufts in overtime, Stevens averted all of them, amassing a final tally of 24 saves. Colby head coach, Heidi Godomsky, says of Stevens' achievement, "Jane's debut performance in the goal cage was phenomenal. I am confident she will emerge as one of the top goal keepers in New England." Stevens also leads the top ranking of all NESCAC field hockey goalies with no goals allowed and 24 saves.
Stevens is a 1997 graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and is the daughter of Garrett and Andrea Stevens.
