CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine --- Jim Ryan finished tied for ninth place for the Colby College men's alpine team and Paige Whistler led the women's team by placing 18th in the giant slalom at the Colby Carnival on Friday at Sugarloaf.

The good news for the Colby men was two skiers in the top 20. The bad news was the two skiers in the top 20 were the only ones to finish both runs. The Mules ended up tied for seventh on the day.

Ryan had identical run times of 51.38 to finish with a two-run total time of 1:42.76. Marc Massie took 20th place for the Mules in 1:43.62. Will Randall and Justin Sperry did not finish their first runs for the Mules, while Sam Glaisher and Matt McKenna did not complete their second runs. Both Glaisher (51.73) and McKenna (51.91) had better first runs than Massie (52.35). Massie's second run of 51.27 was faster than Ryan's second trip.

While the men were hurting for finishers, the Colby women had five skiers in the top 30 to take eighth place. Whistler had runs of 54.27 and 55.70 for a 1:49.97 finish. Jeanne Barthold had a strong finish at 21st place in 1:50.57, Cassady Roberts was 23rd in 1:51.27, Brittney Ziebell had a 1:52.98 for 28th, and Destrey Enders was 30th in 1:53.14.

Middlebury's David Donaldson won the men's giant slalom in 1:40.18, while University of Vermont's Kate Ryley had a 1:44.58 to win the women's event.

Skiing continues Saturday at Sugarloaf with the slalom.
