FORT MYERS, Fla. --- Brady Hesslein (Newton, Mass.) tossed a five-hit shutout to help the Colby College baseball team open up the season with a doubleheader split with Gettysburg College on Saturday in Florida.
Gettysburg scored 11 runs in the first three innings in taking a 19-8 win in the opener. The Mules rebounded for the split with a 2-0 victory. Colby plays Sunday at 11 a.m. against Lawrence and then takes on New Paltz at 2 p.m. during its 12-game spring break trip.
Hesslein and Gettysburg pitcher Joe Saladino each had a shutout in the first four innings. Hesslein finished with four strikeouts and two walks.
Brandon Nieuw (Port Chester, N.Y.) and Robb Arndt (Yarmouth, Maine) had run scoring doubles for Colby in the fifth inning of the second game.
Jake Kramer (Medfield, Mass.) had two hits and a pair of RBI for the Mules in the opener. Arndt, Nik Atsalis (West Hyannis Port, Mass.), and co-captain Brendan Gallagher (Dublin, N.H.) also had two hits in the first game.
