WATERVILLE, Maine --- Despite another home run by first-year Jason Buco (Mehuen, Msss.) of Colby College, senior outfielder David Ricker (Winthrop, Maine) belted a three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to help the University of Southern Maine pull out an 8-5 victory over Colby College in non-conference baseball Wednesday at Coombs Field.
Southern Maine moved to 12-11 overall, while the Mules fell to 9-11. The game came in at three hours, 22 minutes and it was starting to get dark in the 10th inning. The two teams combined to use nine pitchers.
Colby got the first two outs of the 10th inning, but sophomore catcher Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine) singled to keep play going. Matt Powers (Portland, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice and Ricker followed with his home run.
Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) scored the first run of the game for USM in the first inning. He got on by fielder's choice, moved to second on a single by Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H.), took third on a fly ball to deep center, and scored on a wild pitch.
Colby tied the game in the second inning when Devlin McConnell (Merion Station, Pa.) had a one-out single, took second on an error, and scored on an RBI single by Luke Duncklee (Augusta, Maine).
The Mules went ahead for the first time in the fourth inning with a lone run. Mike Mastrocola (Southbury, Conn.) led off with a single, moved to second on a single by McConnell, took third on a sacrifice bunt by Brendan Gallagher (Dublin, N.H.), and scored on a sacrifice fly by Taro Gold (Belmont, Mass.).
Southern Maine added two unearned runs in the fifth inning to regain the lead at 3-2. Chadwick led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. The Mules managed to get two outs, but an error helped score one run. Brett Barrett (Keene, N.H.) followed with an RBI single.
Colby went up again at 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run home run Buco. Brandon Nieuw (Port Chester, N.Y.) led off with a walk and Buco followed with his third home run.
Ricker tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh when he led off with a double, stole second base, and then scored an unearned run on a Colby error.
The Mules quickly bounced back to take another lead at 5-4. The Mules loaded the bases on three singles by Nieuw, Nik Atsalis (West Hyannis Port, Mass.), and Robb Arndt (Yarmouth, Maine). Mastrocola had an RBI groundout with two outs to bring one run home.
Barrett led off the eighth inning for USM with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Troy Thibodeau (Danvers, Mass.), and scored on an RBI single by Verrier.
Chadwick got the final out of the seventh inning and pitched the eighth to earn the win for USM. Roberto Valenti (Lawrence, Mass.) worked the bottom of the ninth for the save.
