WATERVILLE, Maine --- Ray Zeek (Wallingford, Conn.) had three hits and drove in a pair of runs and relief pitcher Abhi Chandel (Columbus, N.J.) earned the victory in five strong innings of work as the Colby College baseball team won 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader at Thomas College on Tuesday.
In the nightcap, first-year right-hander Scott Goldberg (Valley Stream, N.Y.) picked up his first collegiate victory ith 4.2 innings of relief work in an 8-2 win. The Mules move to 15-14 overall, while Thomas falls to 24-15. Colby is back in action Saturday at home against Bates College in a NESCAC East doubleheader at noon.
Chandel entered the game to start the third inning and allowed no earned runs, four hits, one walk, and struck out one batter for his first victory of the season. Meanwhile, Zeek took advantage of a chance to play the leadoff position with a double and triple among his three hits and one run scored. Mike Mastrocola (Southbury, Conn.) added two hits, while Taro Gold (Belmont, Mass.), Nathan Ellis (Milton, Mass.), and John Schroeder (Glencoe, Ill.) all had one hit and one run scored. Robb Arndt (Yarmouth, Maine) walked twice to go along with an RBI single.
The Mules scored a lone run in the top of the first inning when Zeek singled, moved to second on a stolen base, and scored on Arndt's single to right field.
Thomas scored one run in the bottom of the first to tie the game and added two more runs in the second inning for a 3-1 margin.
The Mules loaded the bases in the third inning, but only managed one run when Gold scored on a double play ball by Brendan Gallagher (Dublin, N.H.).
Zeek came up with the big hit of the game in the top of the sixth inning to give Colby two runs and the lead at 4-3. Ellis singled to lead off the inning and promptly stole second base. The Terriers got out the next two batters, but allowed a big walk to Schroeder. Zeek followed with a two-run triple to left field.
Thomas loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning against Chandel. However, the senior right-hander struck out Daniel Ierardi to end the game.
Goldberg entered the game in the second inning of the second contest and was a force by allowing no runs and just one hit while striking out six and walking one batter.
Thomas scored the only run in the first three innings with one in the bottom of the second inning. The Mules, though, took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth. Arndt had a one-out walk and Devlin McConnell (Merion Station, Pa.) had a two-out walk for Gallagher, who ripped a triple to right field to score both runners.
The Mules made it a 3-1 game with one in the sixth inning. Mastrocola led off with a single, moved to third on Gallagher's double, and scored on Gold's RBI fielder's choice.
Colby put the game away with five runs in the top of the seventh inning on six hits and one walk. McConnell and Luke Duncklee (Augusta, Maine) both had two-run singles and Brandon Nieuw (Port Chester, N.Y.) added an RBI single.
Gallagher had the big second game with his double, triple, and two RBI. Gold also had two hits and drove in one run, while McConnell drove in two runs, scored twice, and walked two times. Jason Buco (Methuen, Mass.) also walked twice to go along with one hit and one run. Arndt finished a solid day with two runs, a hit, and one walk.
