AMHERST, Mass. --- The Colby College football team ended a brutal stretch of games Saturday with a 23-3 loss at Amherst College in a game that was close to the end of the third quarter.

The Mules are 0-4 to start the season, but have played four teams with a 12-4 combined record this year. Colby's final four games are against teams with a combined 4-12 mark. The Mules will play host to Hamilton College next Saturday at noon.

Colby's defense came to play and kept the Mules in the game, trailing just 9-0 at halftime after Amherst scored on a safety and then a short touchdown drive.

The Mules made the game even closer when linebacker Jamaal Grant recovered an Amherst fumble on the Lord Jeff 21-yard line. The Mules lost yards on the ensuing drive, but kicker David Bendit booted a collegiate-high 42-yard field goal to cut the margin to 9-3 with 4:51 left in the third quarter.

Colby forced Amherst into a three-and-out when Ryan Veillette had a tackle for loss on a 3rd-and-2 play. The Mules took over on their own 21-yard line with a chance to take the lead. However, Robbie Heflin intercepted a pass for the Lord Jeffs and took it 24 yards for the touchdown to put Amherst up 16-3.

The Lord Jeffs added another touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 51-yard drive on six plays.

Henry Nelson led the Mules defensively with a game-high 13 tackles (7 solo) and an interception from his linebacker position. Daniel Maddox added 11 tackles, while Lester Batiste finished with seven tackles and one sack. Veillette, Zach Padula, Derrick Beasley, and Tony Atkinson all had six stops.

Connor Emmert and Justin Ciero combined for 137 passing yards for the Mules. Michael Lahiff had five catches for 41 yards and Kyle Roth had 45 receiving yards on four catches.
