WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College football players Ryan Veillette (Westfield, Mass.), John Gilboy (Saco, Maine), Derrick Beasley (Andover, Mass.), and Jason Buco (Methuen, Mass.) all earned New England Small College Athletic Conference Football All-Conference honors on Thursday.
Veillette, now a three-time All-NESCAC selection at defensive end, made the first team defense for the first time. Gilboy made the second team offensive line for the second straight year, while Beasley was chosen as a second team defensive back for the second time (also in 2010). Buco, who is just a sophomore, is already showing he is one of the top athletes in the NESCAC after earning second team honors as a defensive back and being selected All-NESCAC in baseball as a first-year.
Colby's four selections to the All-NESCAC team were all versatile players during the course of the season. Beasley and Buco both saw time at wide receiver, while Gilboy played a bit on the defensive line. Veillette was part of the most memorable play of the year while lining up at running back. In an overtime win against Tufts, Veillette threw a 3-yard scoring pass to Beasley for what proved to be the game-winning points.
Veillette, who is the first Mule to earn first team defensive line honors since Sam Handler in 2008, led the NESCAC in sacks (7.5) despite missing the opening game of the season with an injury. The senior had 11 tackles for loss among his 30 tackles this year and finished his career with 115 tackles (26.5 for loss) and 18.5 sacks.
Gilboy, a senior co-captain along with Phil Amato, helped the Mules (3-5 overall) stay together after an 0-4 start to the season. His play at right guard helped protect first-year quarterback Justin Ciero, who had a terrific opening season with the Mules. Gilboy also sacrificed for the team and saw time on the defensive line, making seven tackles.
Beasley had 173 total tackles in his career and seven interceptions. He finished the 2012 season with 39 tackles and one pick. Beasley had nine catches, including three for touchdowns, and 115 yards of receiving this year. Besides the game-winning grab against Tufts, the senior had two touchdowns in a tough 31-28 home loss to Wesleyan.
Buco was tied for third in the NESCAC in interceptions with five and was eighth on the Mules in total tackles (28). He also led Colby in receiving yards per catch (18.8), was second in receiving yards (207), and was tied with Beasley for the Colby lead in touchdown receptions (3).
