WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College field hockey team was tied 1-1 early with eighth-ranked Amherst College, but the Jeffs' Katie McMahon (Denville, N.J.) scored twice and dished an assist on the way to a 4-1 win against the Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference field hockey Saturday.
Amherst moves to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference heading into Sunday's noon start at Bowdoin College. The Mules, who play Hamilton College at noon Sunday, fall to 2-8 overall and 0-7 in the league.
The Jeffs scored just 6:40 into the game on a goal by Chrissy Cantore (Hershey, Pa.), but Colby tallied just 1:05 later when Caitlyn Lancaster (Cornville, Maine) had the equalizer off a pass from Caroline Chessare (Hopkinton, Mass.).
McMahon scored her 10th and 11th goals of the season at 11:08 and 19:33 to put Amherst up 3-1 at halftime. She scored goals on her only two shots of the game.
Amherst added one more score in the second half when Sarah McCarrick (New Canaan, Conn.) scored off a penalty corner. McMahon, who makes the initial pass from the end line off the corners, had one of the two assists.
Rachel Tannenbaum (Berwyn, Pa.) stopped five shots for Amherst, while Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, Conn.) made 11 saves for Colby. The Jeffs had a 26-11 shot advantage and a 19-5 margin in penalty corners.
