Field hockey falls to sixth-ranked Bowdoin

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Playing their fourth consecutive Saturday against a nationally-ranked team, the Colby College field hockey team fell 3-0 to sixth-ranked Bowdoin College in NESCAC play at Bill Alfond Field.
Cathleen Smith (Larchmont N.Y.) played a part in every score for Polar Bears.
Bowdoin improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Mules fall to 4-5 overall and 0-5 in the league. Colby will play host to Wesleyan University at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Mules played second-ranked Middlebury on Sept. 15, then 17th-ranked Tufts on Sept. 22, and 17th-ranked Trinity on Sept. 29.
Katie Riley (Hingham, Mass.), who had a goal and an assist, scored the game-winning goal at 7:31 of the opening half. Smith's centering pass was blasted into the back of the cage by Riley.
The two Bowdoin women reversed roles at 15:25. This time Riley had the cross and Smith scored her first goal of the game from in front on a hard blast.
Smith scored the final goal of the game at 45:50 on a play that started off a penalty corner. Brooke Phinney (Dedham, Mass.) dumped in a pass to Smith, who turned and shot for the score.
Bowdoin had a 21-2 shot advantage and a 5-1 margin in penalty corners. The Polar Bears' Kayla Lessard (Enfield, Conn.) did not have to make a save, while Colby keeper Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, Conn.) made 10 stops.
