MEDFORD, Mass. --- Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, Conn.) and the Colby College field hockey team gave 17th-ranked Tufts University all it could handle as the Jumbos held on for a 3-2 NESCAC win Saturday.
Colby falls to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the NESCAC, while Tufts moves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Burt continues to have an outstanding season in the cage for Colby. She has 51 saves in five games and has made 10 or more saves in all three of the Mules' NESCAC contests. Despite a 33-7 shot advantage and a 23-2 penalty corner edge, Burt stopped 15 shots to keep her team in the game.
Tufts took a 1-0 lead just five minutes into action when senior co-captain Lia Sagerman (LaJolla, Calif.) tallied her third goal of the year on a rebound.
Colby came right back and scored on its only shot of the first half as first-year Ellie Donohue (Andover, Mass.) scored on an attempt that bounced off a Tufts defender in front. That tied the game 1-1 with 26:15 on the clock. Megan Fortier (Falmouth, Maine) had the assist on the goal.
The quick scoring pace continued, as Emily Cannon scored her first on a play in front with 11:47 elapsed and Tufts was up 2-1.
Cannon's second goal of the game came on a backhand shot off a pass from first-year Amanda Jamison (Gaithersburg, Md.) to make it 3-1 with 17 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Mules cut the margin to 3-2 on a great passing play from Fortier to sophomore Kaitlyn O'Connell (Danvers, Mass.) with 10:36 remaining. Fortier leads Colby in scoring with three goals and three assists for nine points, while Donohue is up to four goals on the season.
Sophomore Brianna Keenan (Greenland, NH) earned the win in goal, making two second-half saves.
