Field Hockey—History

The first Colby field hockey team took to the field in the fall of 1968 under head coach Jill Hodsdon and posted a 2-1 record. Deborah Pluck was hired in 1977 and became the first coach to post more than 100 wins (104-103-14) over the course of her 15-year career.

Heidi Godomsky (1993-2001) took over in 1993 and in 1999 led Colby to its first-ever ECAC playoff that ended with a loss to Bowdoin (1-0) after three overtimes.

Brenda Beckwith was head coach for the 2001 and 2002 seasons when the Mules went to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tournament both years. Colby went 18-12 in Beckwith's two seasons. Former Colby player Marcia Ingraham '01 coached the team on an interim basis in 2003 and led the Mules to a 9-6 record and another trip to the NESCAC tourney. Amy Bernatchez led Colby to a 9-7 record and a first-ever trip to the NESCAC semifinals in 2004. Tina Cormier completed her third year as head coach after the 2013 season and led the Mules to a 9-6 record and were consistently ranked among the top 25 teams in the country.

Colby's Wendy Bonner '05 became the school's first-ever player to earn National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-American honors three times in 2002, 2003 and 2004. She made the third team in 2002 and 2003 before earning second team honors in 2004. Current Colby goalie Sarah Evans '15 earned NFHCA All-American First Team honors after a terrific 2013 season. Katie Taylor '98 was Colby's first All-American in 1996. The Mules have had 17 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Regional honors and two women have had their numbers retired--#16 Sara Bunnell '81 and #53 Emilie Davis '90.
