Martin in first place after opening round of NESCAC meet

MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. --- After one round of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Golf Championships Qualifier, it's Colby College's Taggie Martin on top of the leaderboard.
 
Martin shot a 3-under-par 69 to take the first round lead by two strokes over three other golfers. He had a 35 on the front nine at Lyman Orchards Golf Club and added a 34 on the back nine.
 
Colby's Tripp Huber is tied for 20th place with a 77 and captain Harry Smith is a stroke back with a 78. Tom Lampert and Pete Gabranski both had an 80 for the Mules.
 
With a team score of 290, Williams holds an eight-stroke lead over second-place Trinity. Five teams are separated by six strokes as Amherst (301) is third, followed by 2010 Qualifier champion Middlebury (303). Hamilton and Colby are tied for fifth with 304 scores. Both teams have a 17-stroke lead over seventh-place Bates.
 
Tufts, Bowdoin and Wesleyan begin the second round of action on Sunday, teeing off at 11:09 a.m. Hamilton, Colby and Bates will tee off at 12:09 p.m., and Williams, Trinity, Amherst and Middlebury are scheduled for a 12:50 p.m. tee time.
