BABSON PARK, Mass. --- Three first-year players scored in double figures and the Colby College men's basketball team held Wentworth Institute of Technology to 33 percent shooting in a 74-61 season-opening win Saturday night in the Babson Invitational.

The Mules (1-0 overall) will play Babson in the title game Sunday at 4 p.m. WIT goes up against Salve Regina in the consolation game at 2 p.m.

Colby head coach Damien Strahorn got a chance to see his first-year players in game action for the first time and had to be happy with the results. John Gallego was 3-for-3 from the field and finished with 12 points and two steals in 15 minutes of play. Chris Hudnut played just 14 minutes and had 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting and pulled down five rebounds, while Luke Westman saw 12 minutes of action and had 10 points on 2-for-3 shooting from the field and a 6-for-6 effort from the foul line to go along with five boards.

In a balanced night for the Mules, no player scored more than 12 points or saw more than 26 minutes of action. Danny Chase added nine points and two steals, Connor O'Neill had eight points, Jack Crampton had five points and five rebounds, Shane Rogers had six points, and Patrick Stewart had seven boards.

While WIT (0-1) struggled from the field, Colby was 50 percent on field goals (24-for-48) and shot 76 percent (22-for-29) from the free-throw line.

WIT led for most of the first half and held a 27-19 margin with 3:43 to the break. The Mules, behind six points from Westman, had a 13-3 run to end the half and led 32-30.

WIT again came out quickly in the second half and led 42-38 with 15:53 remaining. Colby took the lead for good when Rogers hit a pair of free throws for a 46-44 margin with 12:56 left. Up just 50-48, Colby used a 14-6 scoring run to go up 64-54 with 4:35 to play.
