WATERVILLE, Maine --- Despite five players in double figures and 62 rebounds in the game, the Colby College men's basketball team fell 95-93 in three overtimes to Daniel Webster College in the title game of the Colby Classic on Saturday.
John Hixson nailed a 3-point shot with 29 seconds left in the third overtime to give Daniel Webster the lead for good.
Daniel Webster moved to 3-2 overall, while the Mules fell to 2-3.
Colby's Shane Rogers had just given his team a 93-92 lead with a 3-point shot with 1:03 to play in the third overtime. The Eagles' Tyren Hardy was inside and passed the ball back out to Hixson for his big shot. The Mules had trouble getting a shot in the final 29 seconds and missed on a 3-point shot with about two seconds left. Hardy gathered the defensive rebound with 0.3 seconds to play.
Daris Cosby was the tournament MVP for the Eagles with 25 points on 6-for-11 shooting from 3-point range. Daniel Webster was 18-for-40 on its 3-point attempts (45 percent). Hixson earned all-tournament team honors with 13 points. Ryan Gauthier had a game-high 27 points and nailed six of his 14 3-point shots. David Feinstein had a team-high six assists and scored 13 points.
Colby all-tournament team pick Patrick Stewart had a game-high 15 rebounds (10 offensive), had three assists, and six points. Sam Willson and Ryan Jann both had 15 points, while Chris Hudnut and Connor O'Neil each had 14 points. Shane Rogers dished a game-high nine assists, had 10 points, and seven rebounds. Luke Westman added nine points for the Mules.
The Eagles had an 18-9 advantage in made 3-point shots, while the Mules held a huge 62-40 rebounding margin. Colby also stayed in the game with 22-for-30 shooting from the foul line. The two teams combined for 48 assists on 64 made field goals.
In the second overtime session, Gauthier scored on a lay-up with 18 seconds to play to give the Eagles an 84-83 lead. However, Rogers was fouled at the other end with 10 seconds left and made one of his two free throws to tie the game. Daniel Webster missed on a 3-point shot with three seconds to play.
The Eagles had a 76-72 lead in the first overtime, but the Mules' Ryan Jann hit a jumper with 1:28 to play and then calmly nailed two free throws with 36 seconds left to tie the game at 76-76. Daniel Webster again missed a 3-point shot with about one second to play.
Colby made up a five-point deficit in the last 1:19 of regulation to send the game to the overtime sessions. O'Neil hit a 3-point shot with 31 seconds left and the Mules forced a turnover on the out of bounds play. Westman was fouled with 20 seconds left and made both to tie the contest. The Eagles again had the last shot and missed on a jumper.
