WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's basketball team gave ninth-ranked Williams College fits all night, but the Ephs survived and came away with a 64-61 win in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Williams moved to 19-2 overall and 7-0 in the conference heading into Saturday's 2 p.m. game at Bowdoin College. The Mules dropped to 6-14 overall and 2-5 in the league and will play host to sixth-ranked Middlebury College on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Ephs took a 60-56 lead when Taylor Epley (Louisville, Ky.) scored inside with 2:23 to play. The Mules answered back with a Connor O'Neil (Freeport, Maine) bucket with 2:09 remaining and then a Patrick Stewart (Bangor, Maine) inside move tied the game at 60-60 with just 47 seconds to play.

Epley put Williams ahead for good on another inside basket with 29 seconds to play. The Mules ended up calling a timeout with just 14.2 seconds to play and worked a play that got Stewart fouled with 5.7 seconds remaining. He hit the first free throw to make it 62-61, and then after an Eph timeout, hit the back of the rim on the second effort. Daniel Wohl (La Canada, Calif.) hauled down the rebound for Williams and was fouled with 4.4 seconds left. He calmly sank both free throws for the 64-61 margin. Colby quickly got the ball up the court, but O'Neil's running 3-point shot from the top of the key hit the back of the rim.

Epley finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Wohl had 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting for Williams. Michael Mayer (Durham, N.C.) had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Nate Robertson (Ann Arbor, Mich.) dished six assists and had three steals.

Stewart also had a double-double with 13 points (5-for-8 shooting), 10 rebounds, and three steals for the Mules. Sam Willson (Watertown, Conn.) added 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting, Ryan Jann finished with 10 points, and Chris Hudnut (Chevy Chase, Md.) scored eight.

The Mules got off to a 5-0 lead to start the game, but the Ephs went on a 12-1 run to take a 12-6 margin. Williams led by as much as seven points (26-19) in the opening half, but the Mules stayed aggressive and used a 19-9 run to end the half for a 38-35 lead at the break.

Colby went ahead 47-44 on a jumper by Hudnut with 10:26 to play. However, Williams used a 10-2 run to go up 54-49 with 6:40 to play on an inside bucket by Mayer. Hudnut hit a big 3-point shot to get Colby right back in the game, trailing just 54-52 with 5:52 left.
