AMHERST, Mass. --- The eighth-seeded Colby College men's basketball team stayed with top-seeded Amherst College for a little over 10 minutes Saturday, but the nationally second-ranked Lord Jeffs were too much in taking an 83-52 win in a New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinal game Saturday.

The Mules, a team heavy with first-year and sophomore players and a squad with numerous illness issues in the middle of the season, finished the year at 7-17 overall. Amherst is 23-2 overall and will host the league semifinals and title game next weekend.

Colby first-year center Chris Hudnut had a team-high 21 points and led the Mules this year in scoring average at 12.9 points per contest. Danny Chase added 12 points and Patrick Stewart scored 11 for Colby. Hudnut pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.

Aaron Toomey led the Lord Jeffs with 28 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Allen Williamson added 12 points, three assists, and three steals.

Colby had one lead in the game after Hudnut nailed a 3-point shot with 14:38 left in the first half for a 7-5 lead. The Mules stuck with the Lord Jeffs over the next five minutes and only trailed 17-14 after a Chase jumper with 9:27 to intermission. Amherst, though, took over the game with a 14-0 run to make it 31-14 as the Lord Jeffs went on to a 39-25 lead at the break.

The Lord Jeffs quickly moved the lead into the 20's in the first five minutes of the second half. Amherst led by as much as 34 points before settling for the 31-point victory.
