MIDDLEBURY, Vt. --- Playing the number one team in the country on their home floor on senior day was too much to overcome for the Colby College men's basketball team in a 72-53 setback to Middlebury College on Saturday.

The Panthers (20-1), who have won 22 straight at home, will likely lose their top ranking after being upset earlier in the week at Keene State.

Middlebury jumped out to a 12-4 lead on a hoop from Ryan Sharry at the 14:34 mark of the first half. Colby cut the advantage to four at 15-11 when Alex Swanson drained a three with 10:20 remaining in the half. The Panthers answered with a 7-0 run, taking a 22-11 lead on a jumper from Joey Kizel at the 8:06 mark. Middlebury extended its lead to as many as 14 before Colby’s Eric Beaulieu made it a 33-21 game at the break with the final bucket of the first half.

The Panthers opened the second half on an 11-3 run, taking a 44-24 lead with 15:05 remaining. After Colby’s Shane Rogers set the score at 44-28 at 14:35 mark, Middlebury built a 29-point lead over next eight minutes of play for a commanding 60-31 advantage with 6:55 left to play. Trailing 68-46 at 3:33, the Mules went on a 7-0 run on a pair of Beaulieu buckets sandwiched around a three by Connor O’Neill for a 68-53 deficit with 2:10 on the clock. A pair of Panther lay-ups capped the scoring.

Sharry led Middlebury with 14 points and 16 rebounds

Beaulieu equaled Sharry’s 14 points, Rogers notched a dozen, while Kyle Donovan scored eight with 10 boards for Colby.
