Men's basketball drops game to Bobcats

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Patrick Stewart had a double-double in scoring and rebounding for Colby College, but Graham Safford pumped in 26 points and dished nine assists as Bates College took control at the end of the first half and went on to an 88-76 win in a non-conference game Thursday night.

Bates moves to 6-1 overall, while the Mules fall to 4-2.

Safford entered the game averaging 19.2 points and shot 10-for-20 from the field. He also had five rebounds and a pair of steals.

Patrick Stewart led Colby with a double-double at 24 points and 11 rebounds. He shot 8-for-14 from the field, including a 5-for-7 effort from 3-point range. 

The Mules led by as much as six points in the first half when Sam Willson hit a jumper with 8:41 to play for a 27-21 margin. 

Colby's last lead was at 31-30 with 4:56 left to intermission, but Bates got hot from outside to use a 19-7 scoring run to end the half. Adam Philpott nailed three straight 3-point shots for Bates in a span of 1:16 to put Bates up 46-35. Stewart hit a 3-point shot for Colby with 46 seconds to play. Safford, though, nailed a 35-foot jumper from in front of the Colby bench at the buzzer for a 49-38 lead.

Colby got as close as 55-50 when Stewart drained a 3-point shot with 15:04 to play in the game. With the score 63-54, the Bobcats went on a 10-0 run to put the game away. 

Philpott was 5-for-7 from 3-point range and had 15 points, Mike Boornazian had 13 points, and Billy Selmon scored 12 for Bates. 

Chris Hudnut added 16 points and Ryan Jann had 14 points for Colby. Willson came off the bench to score 11 points.
